How the split is calculated.

Tip-outs come off the top. Everyone then earns points = hours × role weight × tenure multiplier, and the remaining pool divides in proportion to points.

A proportional split lands on fractions of a cent, so the leftover cents go to the largest remainders — which is why the shares above always add up to the pool exactly. SavorCrew refuses to write a distribution that doesn’t balance; this page holds itself to the same rule.

How do you calculate a tip pool split?

Take tip-outs off the total first. Give each person points equal to their hours times their role weight times any tenure multiplier, add the points up, and divide the remaining pool in that proportion. Because the shares land on fractions of a cent, allocate the leftover cents to the largest fractional remainders so the payout sums to the pool exactly. Managers and owners generally cannot be in the pool under federal law; state rules vary.

Tip pool questions, answered.

How does a tip pool split actually work?

Tip-outs (bar, busser, runner) come off the top first. What remains is split by points, not evenly: each person earns hours × their role weight × any tenure multiplier, and the pool divides in proportion to points.

Why do the shares not divide evenly to the cent?

They almost never do. A proportional split produces fractions of a cent, so somebody has to get the leftover. This distributes each remaining cent to the largest fractional remainders — the shares always sum to the pool exactly, with no cent invented or lost.

What are role weights?

A multiplier per role, so a server on the floor and a barback can share one pool on agreed terms. A weight of 1.0 is a full share; 0.5 is a half share. You set them; the calculator just applies them.

Is this legal advice?

No. Tip pooling rules vary by state and by who is in the pool — managers and owners generally cannot participate under federal law. This is a math tool, not a compliance ruling. Check your own jurisdiction.

Does SavorCrew do this automatically?

Yes. Hours come from real punches instead of being typed, the split runs every shift, and each distribution is logged with the math attached for your records.

This is what SavorCrew runs automatically every shift.
